Program Description

The course entitled “Design of General Utility Systems” covers various types of utilities employed in process industry, their purposes and description of batch and continuous type plants. Further, covered design of compressed air system including codes and standards to be followed for their design, materials of construction, general selection criteria for compressors, and procurement strategy. Nitrogen system’s design, codes and standards to be followed for its design, membrane technology for nitrogen generation, overall process control, materials of construction and procurement strategy are also covered. Design of water system including its treatment, fire protection systems, and procurement strategy are covered.

Course Objectives

  • To identify the important equipment involved in a given utility and understand the batch and continuous type plants
  • To know the design of air, nitrogen and various water systems used in a chemical process plant
  • To explain the various utilities and carry out the sketching of schematics of various utilities involved in the Chemical Process Industries
  • To select the material of construction of the components of the utility systems
  • To create the utility layout, and establish the procurement strategy
  • To design the given utility of Chemical Process Industries to comply with codes and standards

Dr. Nakka Muralidhara Rao

Subject Matter Expert - Thermal & Fluid Engineering, L&T EduTech

As an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, Dr. Rao brings nearly three decades of experience in research, development, and industry. He specializes in computational fluid dynamics, heat transfer, two-phase flow, microfluidics, nanofluids, low-grade energy, solar energy, biodiesel, chaotic analysis, and piping analysis. While serving as the Head of Rolta Academy, he played a pivotal role in establishing it as a world-class institution and led the Project Control, Proposal & Estimation department. Dr. Rao also spearheaded the design and analysis of the Flame Deflector Plate for the dissipation of flume gases in a semi-cryo engine test facility, collaborating with ISRO for the Test Facility Centre in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu, while utilizing CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis techniques. A seasoned academic and industry professional, Dr. Rao excels in designing and delivering cutting-edge educational programs and training solutions in Mechanical Engineering, while mentoring the next generation of engineers.

Dr. L.S Bhadrinarayanan

Subject Matter Expert- Chemical Engineering, L&T EduTech

Dr. Bhadri earned his B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from Anna University, followed by an MSc in Physics specializing in Nuclear Energy Engineering from KTH Royal Institute of Technology and PSI, Switzerland. He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Anna University, Chennai. His professional journey includes roles as a Research Assistant at Nuclear Power Safety, KTH, and as a Research Associate Fellow in the Fast Reactor Design Group at Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic Research (IGCAR). Dr. Bhadri also holds a European Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering from the European Nuclear Education Network, Belgium. With expertise spanning chemical and process engineering, nuclear engineering, experimental design and prototypes, and software applications, Bhadri has over a decade of research and academic experience. His work encompasses experimental physics, chemical reactor engineering, nuclear power safety, recycling of industrial wastes, and sustainability. Notably, his research in ion exchange has led to an Indian patent and a journal publication.
